Innocence Lost

Santa Claus is real,

I don’t care what others say

How else could there be presents

When you wake on Christmas Day?

The tooth fairy, I know her well,

The Easter bunny is my friend

She trades your infant ivory

For hard cash, that you will spend.

Grandma says that dragons don’t exist,

Elves and fairies, they’re unreal

I’m begging you, don’t listen

It’s your dream she’s trying to steal.

It’s not that she doesn’t love you,

She worships you I know

But she wants to see you grow up

Before it is time for her to go.

She’s never seen a unicorn at play,

Not a troll or fiendish ghoul.

She never would admit it now

But she knows she was a fool.

So don’t you make that same mistake

Hold on for as long as you can

To Superman and Scooby Doo,

Captain Hook and Peter Pan.

These things that make you happy

When your imagination runs wild,

This is how it should always be

Never lose that inner child.

For there is a price to growing up,

And I don’t want you to count the cost,

When the magic disappears

And your innocence is lost.
