“Another anniversary passes and again we’ll stand as one and weep,
Hand are wrung and tears are shed, because the pain and shock cut deep.
Reason, truth and understanding, the currency of rational debate,
Their value lost in bloodshed, exchanged for death and hate.
When cultures clash they clamour, for the strong to stand and fight,
Surely we can see by now that two wrongs can’t make things right.
What can be gained from murder, what hope is gleaned from fear
It only kills the innocence in the freedom we all hold dear.
We aren’t born with an agenda, we are not equipped to kill
But we lose sight of all compassion as yet more blood they spill.
Skin tones causing bigotry, religion only serving to divide,
When the superficial facade matters more than theĀ beautiful soul inside.
Perhaps the deaf can see the most, maybe the blind can hear the truth
As self-appointed prophets pervert the innocence of youth.
Don’t tell our sons and daughters that their martyrdom is just,
You epitomise pure evil when you abuse their faith and trust.
Jihadist or Crusader, what can you hope to gain,
You are not forging understanding, only propagating pain.
Whichever God you represent, you are causing them naught but shame,
Killing indiscriminately , don’t pretend it is in their name.
Through these cowardly acts of violence you hope to subjugate,
Mindless to reality that you are only breeding hate.
Just lay down your weapons, it would help you to understand.
The gun is not as useful as an open, caring hand.
You are fooling those around you, you never will achieve
Any lasting moral victory, only generations yet to grieve.
There is room for us all to walk as one, regardless of the past.
Love through peace can endure forever, but Empires never last.
