4 a.m. tears

No need to check the time, I know

Instinct sees me reach for a phone

No message, no thought, hopeless

Everything now is ashen or stone

That moment before truth catches up

And I bear a split-second grin

Where you are still there, you still care

And then the reality, you didn’t begin

Talk of a future, you said it not me

I wanted it more, now I can see

That words mean nothing

Just cheap currency

I want to hate you, it would be easier

But I can’t, and it hurts me to say

You’ve not been the first

To push my love away

The soft gentle discard, those careful words

That you tried to find

To offer comfort not grief

But they still haunt my mind

I made you ill? You told me your truth

But what did I do

I didn’t push, I didn’t chase

I just fell for you

You had me at hello

So corny I know

And now your goodbye

A fatalistic blow

My world so much smaller now

I broke my own heart

I dared to believe

A fool from the start

And in each broken piece

There is nothing but pain

And 4 a.m. tears

Will fall once again.
